Search anywhere — the queries that work
Get more out of the search box by understanding what it indexes and how to phrase queries.
Tap the magnifier in the toolbar to open the search box. As you type it lists saved routes, systems, documents, manuals, vendors, Crew Book cards, playbooks, trips, notepad notes and stowage items. Legs, observations, issues, incidents, work orders, jots and calendar events come from the 'Deep search' row in the same box. Deep search shows the jots your Jot inbox shows you — never another person's private or named jot — and the vault's documents only to the owner, a manager and the captain. Type what you'd say out loud. Here are the queries that work.
Steps
-
Find a trip
Trip name, the origin or destination port, or the captain's name. 'Block Island', 'Newport overnight' — both work. Dates are not indexed for trips, so a date such as the Fourth of July only finds a trip if it is in the trip's name.
-
Find an observation or issue
Describe what you saw. 'port engine smoke', 'leak under V-berth', 'high oil temp' — finds the observation log entry and any service that came of it.
-
Find a vendor or note
Vendor company name, website, address, the notes on the vendor card, or a scope category such as 'Electrical'. Comm-log text is not indexed, and neither are the notes a vendor leaves at clock-out.
-
Find a thing
Stowage labels ('lazarette') and spares ('impeller', 'oil filter') are indexed. Tap a result to jump to it.
-
Open a saved route
Tap a saved route in the results, then Go to source: the Chart opens with that route loaded on it, as tapping it in Routes does.
-
Find a calendar event
'haul out', 'detail', 'launch' — an event's title, location and notes are all indexed. The only date that matches is the short numeric one shown on the row, so 'next Tuesday' and 'August' find nothing.
