Follow a route — go-from-here and the next waypoint

Follow a saved route: the chart shows cross-track error and distance to go.

Following starts BY ITSELF. There is no Follow button on a saved route — when a trip leg goes underway, Mission Control shows the route-follow HUD along the bottom of the chart, and it goes away when the leg stops being underway.

The HUD is three figures, read-only: SOG (speed over ground), DTG (distance to go) and XTE (cross-track error — how far off the line you are). It is a display, not a control; you cannot tap it.

If the leg was auto-routed, it was planned over water charted at least your draft plus the operating depth margin (2 ft unless you changed it, under Navigation defaults in the vessel editor or on the leg); inside a verified, maintained channel that floor relaxes to 1.5 × your draft with no margin added. Unknown depth is treated as impassable. Following a route supplements your watch; it never replaces it.

Steps

  1. Put the route on a leg

A saved route is followed by being on a leg you start. A route's ☰ menu on the Routes list offers Reverse, Reorder, Re-check against current charts and Share — Delete is a swipe to the left on the row — and there is no Follow or Activate.

  2. Watch the HUD

Three cells along the bottom of the chart: SOG, DTG, XTE. No bearing to the next waypoint and no ETA.

Two states are said in words, not by colour alone. More than 1 nautical mile off the line, the XTE cell turns red and its label reads XTE · OFF TRACK. When no fresh GPS fix has come for more than 5 seconds, the figures turn grey and a red line under them reads "No fresh GPS fix since <time> — these numbers may be old".

A figure is shown only when there is a reading behind it. Before the first GPS fix, SOG, DTG and XTE read —; DTG and XTE also read — on a leg with no route to measure against (fewer than two points with a position among its origin, waypoints and destination).

  3. There is nothing to tap

The HUD takes no gestures at all — it is deliberately transparent to touch so it never eats a tap meant for the chart underneath. There is no skip-waypoint gesture and no End Route button.

Following stops when the leg does: end or abort the leg and the HUD goes. To change where you are heading mid-passage, use Reroute on the chart toolbar.
