What the phase chip means

Pre-departure, Departing soon, Underway, Post-operation — what the chip reads at each point and what it changes.

The phase chip sits on the trip card at the top of Today and reads PRE-DEPARTURE, DEPARTING SOON, UNDERWAY or POST-OPERATION. It is worked out from the clock alone — the trip's departure and return times against now — and it decides which tasks Today lists under NOW and which under COMING UP. It is not the trip's status pill on the Trips list, which reads Upcoming, Underway, Returned or Cancelled.

Steps

  1. More than 48 hours out

From trip creation until departure. The chip reads PRE-DEPARTURE and Today lists the trip's pre-departure tasks under NOW. More than 48 hours out Trip Detail shows no lifecycle button; it appears inside the 48-hour window.

  2. Pre-departure

Inside 24 hours of departure the chip changes to DEPARTING SOON. The phase itself does not change — Today lists the same pre-departure tasks. Inside 48 hours the lifecycle button appears, reading 'Start Leg: <trip name>', and opens the Start Leg wizard.

  3. Underway

Between departure and return. The Mission Control button reads 'End Leg: <trip name>' when a leg is running and another leg is still scheduled behind it, and 'End Trip: <trip name>' when the running leg is the last one. Today lists the trip's Underway tasks under NOW.

  4. Between legs

Between legs the chip still reads UNDERWAY — it is worked out from the trip's departure and return times, not from the legs. The lifecycle button reads 'Start Leg: <trip name>' while a scheduled or paused leg remains, and 'End Trip: <trip name>' once none does.

  5. The last leg

The last leg of a multi-leg trip. The chip still reads UNDERWAY; the only change is the lifecycle button, which reads 'End Trip: <trip name>' instead of 'End Leg: <trip name>'.

  6. Closed

After the End Trip wizard finishes. The trip's status pill on the Trips list changes to Returned and it moves under the Returned chip. Once the return time has passed the phase chip reads POST-OPERATION.
