Expiry reminders — 60, 30, 7 days, and day-of
Get a morning notification before registrations, insurance, and crew licenses lapse — even if you haven't opened the app in weeks.
Any Vault document with an expiry date, and every license on a crew card, gets a four-rung reminder ladder: 60 days out, 30 days out, 7 days out, and the day it expires — each at 9:00 in the morning, when you can actually do something about it. A USCG Certificate of Documentation gets a fifth rung at 90 days, because federal renewals take longer to come back. (Crew licences run the four rungs; the 90-day rung is for the Certificate of Documentation only.) These are real notifications from your device, so they fire with the app closed. Archived documents never nag; history is history.
Steps
-
It rides the expiry date
Give a document an expiry date in the Vault (or a license an expiry on a crew card) and the ladder arms itself. Renew and update the date — the old reminders clear and the new ones arm automatically.
-
Needs notification permission
If you've told iOS not to allow theONE notifications, the ladder can't fire — the in-app expiry pills and the Today tile still show the same truth. iOS Settings → Notifications → theONE turns them back on. (That is the iOS Settings app, not theONE's own Settings, which now has a Notifications page of its own.)
-
Safety gear — the same countdown, no notification
theONE's record of dated safety equipment carries its own dates — an EPIRB's battery and registration, a beacon's hydrostatic release, and the service or flare date on an item. Those dates run the same countdown the Vault uses, but only on screen: they drive the Work List and the Safety Equipment list, and nothing schedules a device notification from them.
It is deliberately the same one. A beacon whose registration the Vault called expired and the safety list called current would be two answers to one question, and that is the answer you cannot afford at a boarding or in a liferaft.
Where a beacon carries several dates — battery, registration, hydrostatic release — theONE counts down to whichever runs out first, and tells you which one it is. The battery date is the one printed on the case and the one most captains remember; a registration lapsing two years earlier is how a beacon ends up transmitting to a rescue center that has you at an old address.
The list you edit this from is Safety Equipment. It is not in the menu (☰). The owner, management and the captain type 'safety equipment' in the search box to open it, and tap + to add an item. Crew see the list too, but search does not offer it to them: they open it from the Open Safety Equipment button on the Safety Equipment help article, and they cannot add or change gear.
