Send a float plan

Get your plan to the right people, before you leave the dock or while you are underway.

A float plan is a written description of where you're going and when you expect to be back, sent to people on shore. theONE composes it from your trip data — including the leg you are on right now — renders it as a PDF, and hands that PDF to the iOS share sheet for you to send.

Steps

  1. Set float plan contacts

Menu (☰) → Ship's Directory, then the float-plan contacts inside it — or type 'float plan contacts' in the search box, which is the reliable way in on a fresh boat with no contacts yet. Add the people who should get every float plan: spouse, family, dockmaster, anyone who would raise an alarm if you did not check in.

  2. Open Float Plan Composer

Open the Emergency drawer (the red triangle at the top of Mission Control, or the chart drawer's Man Overboard row) and tap File a float plan. Under Trip / Route, From Trip lists the leg underway now first — labelled "Underway now" — then the scheduled legs of the next 30 days, soonest first; pick one and the route, times and people fill in. When there is nothing to pick the picker reads "Nothing underway and no legs scheduled in the next 30 days. Switch to Free Text to describe the passage." Free Text is there for a plan that isn't a trip.

  3. Review the composed plan

The filed document is a PDF with these sections: Trip (departure, destination, route, ETD, ETA, expected return, call-in interval), People (operator, crew, passengers, persons on board), Vessel Description (colors, length, radio callsign, EPIRB hex ID, MMSI), Safety Gear, Communications (VHF channels, cellular, satellite), Contacts (the people you filed with and your emergency contacts), and Overdue Action. The route is one departure and one destination, not a leg-by-leg list, and the Coast Guard is named by Sector, not district. Work through those sections in the sheet before you send.

  4. Send

Tap Send to contacts in the toolbar. theONE checks the plan, renders it as a PDF and hands that PDF to the iOS share sheet once — you choose from there how it goes out and to whom. theONE does not mail or text the contacts itself. The plan is filed — and its overdue reminder armed — only when the share sheet says it was sent; close the share sheet without sending and nothing is filed, and what you typed stays on the screen.

  5. Closing the plan is yours to do

THE END CRUISE WIZARD DOES NOT TOUCH YOUR FLOAT PLAN. Nothing in the trip-ending flow knows about it, and nobody is told you are home.

Close it yourself: Float Plan History → the plan → 'Mark home safe'. That stops the overdue monitor. Then tell your contacts the way you would have anyway — a text, a call — because theONE does not send an arrival notice.

It never has, and the cost of believing it is an overdue alarm left armed against people waiting to hear from you.
