Connect a Wi-Fi gateway for live telemetry

What a gateway is, what to buy, and how its live values reach the tiles.

Live NMEA 2000 telemetry requires a small Wi-Fi gateway box on the boat's data backbone. Once a gateway is added as a bridge, theONE reads live values from it — position, speed and heading, engine RPM and hours, coolant and oil temperature, oil pressure, fuel rate and level, wind, depth, shore power and tank levels, depending on what your instruments put on the bus. Live decoding ships. Add the gateway as a bridge and select the 'NMEA Wi-Fi' source on Mission Control, and theONE reads the values off it into the tiles. The older 'Wi-Fi' source is discovery only — it finds a gateway and says so, and its banner reads 'Gateway found · manual entry only'.

Steps

  1. What a gateway is

A small box (size of a deck of cards) that plugs into any spare T-connector on your NMEA 2000 network and broadcasts the data over Wi-Fi. theONE connects to it like any other Wi-Fi service.

  2. Recommended hardware

Yacht Devices YDWG-02 or Actisense W2K-2. theONE's gateway setup wizard has a template for each, and for their Ethernet versions (YDEN-02, WGX-1), Digital Yacht NavLink2, a Vesper Cortex M1 or Hub and a Signal K server.

  3. Install (10 minutes)

Pop any T-connector cover on your NMEA 2000 backbone, plug the gateway in, the network powers it. The gateway creates its own Wi-Fi or joins your boat's existing Wi-Fi — your choice.

  4. Add it as a bridge

Once installed, add it as a bridge: Menu (☰) → Settings → Vessel Setup → Connectivity → NMEA Bridges, or the 'Connect a device' bar at the top of the Live telemetry card on Mission Control. Then tap the 'NMEA Wi-Fi' chip on that card. The line under 'Live telemetry' says where the bridge has got to — 'NMEA · add a bridge in Settings to go live', then 'NMEA · connecting to bridges…', 'NMEA · 1 bridge ready · no data yet', then 'NMEA · 1 bridge live' with the time of the last reading. Finding a gateway on its own never makes the tiles live.

  5. What you don't need

You don't need a separate iPad-mounted device, you don't need to pair anything, and you don't need a subscription to the gateway vendor. It's a one-time install.
