The screen before the app — what you agreed to

The first thing theONE shows is the Privacy Policy, the Terms and one question about your age. Here is what that screen is, what gets recorded, and where to find it again.

Before theONE opens for the first time it shows you one screen: links to the Privacy Policy and the Terms of Service, one question — How old are you? (18 or older, 13 to 17, Under 13) — and a box to tick to agree. Under 13 stops there: theONE is for 13 and over, and nothing you chose is kept. From 13 to 17 a parent or guardian agrees for you, and the screen asks you to hand the phone to them. Nothing else is asked. The first time you see it, nothing about your boat or yourself has been collected — no account exists and nothing has been sent anywhere. (If the documents change you see it again, and by then you may have an account and a boat that syncs.)

The box is not pre-ticked, and "I agree" does nothing until you tick it. That is deliberate. An agreement you did not make is not an agreement.

What gets recorded, and where. The date you agreed, which version of the documents you saw, the app version you saw them on, and your age answer — and, from 13 to 17, that a parent or guardian agreed. That record stays on this iPhone — it is not sent to us and it is not part of the boat's record, so it does not sync and it is not affected by switching vessels.

If the documents change, the screen comes back once, with the new date. Your old agreement is not quietly carried forward onto something you have not read.

If you do not agree, theONE cannot be used — there is no reduced version behind that screen. Deleting the app removes everything, including the record of the question.

Steps

  1. See what you agreed to

Menu (☰) → Settings → About. "Your agreement" gives the date, the document version and the app version. The Privacy Policy and Terms are linked on the same screen.

  2. Read the documents at any time

Both are on theonevcc.com and both are linked from the gate itself, before you agree, and from About afterwards. You never have to agree to something to find out what it says.

  3. Siri and Shortcuts before you agree

theONE's Siri phrases and Shortcuts exist as soon as the app is installed. Until you have agreed, they will not save anything for you — they say so and ask you to open the app first. Man Overboard and Log Incident always work, agreement or not, and so does stopping a track — saying “Man overboard on theONE” opens the Emergency drawer on top of this screen. A jot dictated on an Apple Watch waits on the watch until you have agreed. Anything you share into theONE from another app waits, untouched, until you have agreed.

  4. If About says no acceptance is recorded

That should not be possible from inside the app — the only way to reach About is to have got past the gate. Please report it.
