The one question we asked you — usage and crash reports
theONE asked once whether you would share anonymous usage and crash reports. Here is exactly what each one does, what it can never see, and how to change your mind.
Some time after you set the boat up, theONE asked you one question: would you share anonymous usage and crash reports. Two switches, both refusable, and it only ever asks once — saying no is an answer, not a reason to keep asking.
Why we asked at all. We would rather ask you straight than bury a switch in a settings page and quietly hope you find it. You are handing this app your boat's maintenance record; the least we owe you is a plain question.
Anonymous usage tells us which features actually get used — that a trip was created, that an observation was logged. Event names and counts. It is how we decide what to build next instead of guessing.
Crash reports tell us where the app broke when it broke. Without them we find out only if you happen to tell us, which means most faults are never found at all.
What neither one can ever see. Your position. Your track. Your vessel name, homeport or HIN. Owner or crew names. Photos, documents, vendors, engine readings — and anything you have ever typed into a form. That is not a policy we could change quietly: names, positions and long text are stripped on this device, before anything is sent.
Where it goes. To our own server, api.theonevcc.com, and no one else's. The app holds no third-party key at all — our server adds it and forwards, which also means we can shut the tap off without shipping you a new build.
Off means forgotten. Turn usage off and the anonymous ID is discarded. Turn it back on later and a new one is made, so the new sessions cannot be tied to the old ones.
Everything else is unchanged: your records live on this device, and nothing leaves it unless you sign in; if you do, the boat's record also goes to theONE's own server so your other devices and your crew can see it (Account says exactly what). See "Where your data lives" for the full picture.
Steps
-
Change either one, any time
Menu (☰) → Settings → Privacy & Lock. "Analytics" and "Crash Reporting" are separate pages with separate switches — you can run one and not the other.
-
Check what is actually on
Each page has a Status row that reads Off, Starting…, Active — or Pending setup, in a build that has nowhere to send them. It reports the real state of the service, not just what the switch says.
-
If you said 'Not now' and changed your mind
Nothing was held against it. Open either page and turn the switch on; it takes effect immediately.
-
If you said yes and changed your mind
Turn it off. Usage stops at once and the anonymous ID is thrown away. Crash reporting stops at once too.
