Why did this alert fire? — the causal trace

Open the causal trace on a record to see the links the engine has drawn between it and everything else.

The causal trace hangs off records, not off alerts. Open it from a record's detail screen — an issue, an observation, a work order, an incident, a vendor, a leg, a stowage item, a document, a crew card or a playbook — with the connected-dots button in the toolbar.

The trace draws the links the engine has recorded between that record and others. Tap a link and the "Why?" sheet explains it: the kind of link and its confidence, how that confidence was built from a base figure plus each modifier, when the link was established, any review written on it, and the record at each end.

The tank and engine banners on Mission Control carry no trace. Tapping one opens Tank Alerts or Engine Alerts, where you can see the current reading, the threshold, whether the alert is on, and when it last triggered.

Steps

  1. Open a record's trace

Open the record — an observation, a work order, an incident, a document — and tap the connected-dots button in the toolbar. On an observation or an issue it is a Trace row inside the detail instead.

  2. Read a link

Tap a link in the trace. The "Why?" sheet names the kind of link and its confidence, shows how that confidence was built, when the link was established, and the record at each end.

  3. An alert has no trace

A tank or engine alert has no trace. Tap its banner on Mission Control and you land on Tank Alerts or Engine Alerts — the current reading, the threshold, whether the alert is enabled, and when it last triggered. That is where you decide whether to act or to change the threshold.
