Signing in with an emailed code
No password, or not to hand? Account emails a six-digit code. Here is how it works, and what to do when it does not come.
Account emails a six-digit code, and it works only on the phone or iPad where you asked for it: that phone keeps a private number for the request, which is never in the mail, and the cloud checks it. Type the code in the box Account shows and tap Sign in. If <your address> can sign in, a six-digit code is on its way — Account says it that way because the cloud answers the same whether or not the address has an account.
A code works once, for ten minutes; five wrong tries end it. If it is refused or runs out, tap Send a new code; nothing was lost.
The mail comes from theONE <signin@theonevcc.com>. The code is never paused by wrong passwords: it is the way in when a password is locked or forgotten.
Steps
-
Email me a sign-in code
On Account, type your email and tap Email me a sign-in code. Account says "If <your address> can sign in, a six-digit code is on its way" and shows a box for it. Type the six digits and tap Sign in. The code works once, for ten minutes, and only on the phone or iPad that asked for it; five wrong tries end it.
-
No mail arrived
The server answers the same whether or not it sent one, so the app does not claim a mail went. A code goes only to an address that already has a theONE account; it never makes one. New to theONE? Choose Create account.
Give it a minute, then look in junk or spam for theONE <signin@theonevcc.com>. Still nothing? Tap Send a new code. The newest code is the one that works on this phone. If you have a password, tap Use a different way to sign in and sign in with it.
-
The code is refused
Account shows the cloud's words under the box. Check the six digits and try again, or tap Send a new code: a code is spent once used, after ten minutes, or after five wrong tries.
-
It says to wait before asking again
Ask for several codes in a row and Account asks you to wait before the next. The message says how long: the cloud sets the wait, and theONE shows the cloud's own words rather than a number of its own. A code already sent still works until it expires, so look in your mail first, or sign in with your password.
